CORTO.ALTO

Saturday 12 Sep

Behind the name corto.alto is Liam Shortall, a Scottish musician born in 1996 who, at first glance, looks like the kind of effortlessly likeable thirty-something you’d happily grab a pint with. Put an instrument in his hands, though, and things quickly become extraordinary.

Trombonist, bassist, keyboard player, producer—corto.alto is one of the most exciting acts to emerge from the UK’s nu-jazz scene in recent years. His music pairs astonishing musicianship with the sharpest edges of hip-hop, urban music, and broken beat, blurring genres with remarkable ease. Just listen to “WHODIS”, his standout collaboration with the one and only Mick Jenkins.

By the time he steps onto the Poplar stage, his brand-new album will have just been released. All that’s left to do is enjoy the wait—and get ready for every surprise Liam Shortall, better known as corto.alto, has in store.
